I couldn't even come up with a title for this post, my brain is fried. Tom went in for his dental yesterday. Got the call from the vet, he was out of surgery, but they had to cut out early. They got 5 abcessed incisors out, and broke off some of the plaque and tartar. Then his temp started going up. It went up to over 106. Bad news. They were able to get one of the growths off of his rear leg. They got him off the anesthesia and started cooling him down. Ice packs and cold IV fluids. Sheesh, I am getting too old for this shit. Yep, I just said that.
It appears that he has a condition called Malignant Hyperthermia. Click HERE to read more info. So, factor in his kidney issues, we know that we can't put him under inhaled anesthesia again. So, keep your paws crossed that he can make it the rest of his life not needing any type of major surgery. If he does, we are kind of screwed.
Being a picky eater too, I am now faced with being creative to get his meds in him. He figured out that the meat balls from canned food had pills in them. This morning, he took them in pill pockets. Let's hope I can keep him fooled.
Needless to say, I had a pretty scary day yesterday...I am kind of spent.
Oh poor you and Tom. What a worry. I'm so glad he came through it all OK but so stressful for you both. Good luck with the pill popping. That can be a mission on it's own. I don't have any creative suggestions. I haven't had to give my kids more than a worm pill every few months and I can usually trick them once!
ReplyDeleteHope your weekend is peaceful and restful.
Sorry to hear about Tom and the big scare. Hope he is doing better now. I don't have any suggestions for the pills. My dogs won't take them in food, so I've always just pushed them down their throats. Good luck and we will have our paw prayers going for both of you.
ReplyDeleteHello there, we've just started following you from the Pet Blog Hopper.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry to hear you had to go through that scare, and I hope he feels and gets better soon now. The only way I can give my puppy medication (like worming tablets) is to wrap them in a slice of ham, which she just swallows without tasting.
Stopped by from the Blog Hop. Sorry to hear you had a scary Friday the 13th, but glad that things are looking up now! Hope you have a great weekend.
ReplyDeleteGoodness. I'm sorry you all are having such a tough time. We've had a lot of success in hiding pills in peanut butter or cream cheese. Both are so sticky that they can't easily spit it out. Hope that helps. Hang in there!
ReplyDeleteSounds like some intense moments over your way. I hope things get better and all begin to heal. You have some great pups here. : )

ReplyDeletePoor Tom! I hope he doesn't need more surgery. Dana caught on to the 'pills hidden in X' as well..we had to resort to putting them down her throat after she ate..sometimes they are just a little too smart!
